Where Children Flourish

Parents

My child is going to be absent because they are sick. Do I need to call the school?

Yes. If your child is going to be absent, please call the school at 732-452-2910 and press 1. If you want the teacher to prepare a packet of missed work, please call by 10:00 AM to ensure that the teacher has time to prepare the packet. The work can be picked up in the Main Office after 3:00 PM. A written note explaining the absence is required upon the child’s return to school. Please refer to the Parent Handbook for more details.

My child is going to be absent for an extended period of time. What should I do?

If your child is going to be absent from school for an extended period of time, we ask that you inform the Main Office as soon as you are aware of the extended absence.

What do I do if I need to pick my child up before dismissal?

Please write a note to your child’s homeroom teacher if he/she is getting picked up early. Please refer to the Parent Handbook for more details.

What do I do if there is a change to my child's daily pick up routine?

For the safety of the student, all adults who are picking up a child at the end of the school day must have a designated pick up spot. If another adult is picking up your child, please make sure they are listed on the emergency contact card and that your child and the adult know the exact pick up spot. For safety reasons, any child not picked up will wait in the main office. If there needs to be a change to the routine, please call the main office and we will relay the message to the student. While we understand that situations come up and plans need to be changed, please do not make a habit of altering the pick up routine.

How do I know if my child’s club is meeting after school?

At Menlo, we strive to provide opportunities for students to participate in various clubs after school. Please refer to the “CLUBS” section on our school website to look at the specific dates and times each club is meeting. All clubs will be dismissed out of the front doors by the Main Office at dismissal. Adults picking up students from after school activities must wait outside the school.

How can my child celebrate their birthday in school?

Birthdays are such a special celebration in a child’s life and often sharing that celebration in school is a yearly highlight. There are a variety of ways to celebrate your child’s birthday in school:

-       Sending in individual edible treats (nothing that needs to be cut)

-       Donating a book to the classroom library in your child’s name

Prior to sending anything in for birthday celebrations, please check with your child’s homeroom teacher for number of students and if there are any food allergies. We do not allow balloons or party favors to be brought into school. Invitations to birthday parties outside of school cannot be distributed in school unless all students from the class are invited. Please refer to the Parent Handbook for more details.

My child forgot something at school at the end of the day. Can I bring my child back to school to get it?

Students will not be allowed access to go back to their classroom for any items they forgot. Fortunately, the advances of technology provide students the opportunity to access all of their textbooks online. While forgetting something in school is unfortunate, it provides a teachable moment of the importance of responsibility, one of the Character Counts pillar we focus on throughout the year.

My child is telling me that another student is bothering them. What should I do?

Please contact your child’s teacher immediately. It is better to handle the situation immediately than to wait. We do not want any child to feel uncomfortable about coming to school for any reason, so please do not hesitate to contact the class homeroom teacher first.

What is the best way to contact my child’s teacher?

There are a plethora of ways to contact your child’s teacher and you are encouraged to use whichever method is comfortable for you depending on the situation. All teachers have an email address which is available in the “TEACHERS” section on the school website. You can also call and leave a message for the teacher in the main office. Teachers can also schedule face to face meetings before, during or after school based on their availability. You can expect the teacher to return your email or message within 24 hours.

My child lost their username and password to their online accounts. What do I do?

Student Usernames and Passwords can be found in Parent Portal under the Student Data tab.  The district utilizes a Single Sign On program called Classlink that will give them access to all of their digital materials through just one Username and Password.

If you require further assistance after checking Parent Portal or if there are any issues accessing any of the online accounts, please contact the Assistant Principal, Donald Platvoet.  Mr. Platvoet can be contacted through email at donald.platvoet@edison.k12.nj.us or by calling 732-452-2910 ext. 67003.
